WATCH: Rescued Dog With A Broken Pelvis Still Manages To Care For Her Baby

Carmella is a Chihuahua who was rescued from a backyard breeder. The young men who rescued her knew that they could not appropriately care for her, so they asked if Hope Animal Sanctuary could take her. At the time, Carmella was pregnant and she had also been run over at some point which broke her pelvis. We agreed and everything has been going well.

Our Operations Manager at the sanctuary, Sharon Stone, took Carmella to the vet the same day that she got her and had her X-rayed. The X-ray showed that she was carrying one puppy and also clearly showed that her pelvis had been broken and it had not healed properly. This meant Carmella would not be able to have the baby naturally. The baby was taken out by c-section in February.

It was touch and go for a few hours, but Sharon has years of experience and did not give up. She placed the baby in a heating pad while wrapped in warm towels and fed her using a makeup sponge trimmed to fit her tiny mouth. Within two hours she was ready to eat again!

Carmella had no milk to feed her baby and was slow to recover from her surgery, so Baby Charley had to be hand-fed with a sponge every two hours, 24 hours a day.  It took Carmella 10 days to finally realize that Charley was her baby and she began to take care of her.  She still had no milk but within a few days, she did begin to make a little bit. Baby Charley still had to be fed with the sponge to supplement feedings from Carmella.

Baby Charley is doing great! Her eyes are open and she is very active. Your donations made it possible for us to save both Carmella and her precious Baby Charley.
