Protected Wombats Killed in Australia

Since the 1970s, wombats have been protected in New South Wales, Australia under the National Parks and Wildlife Act. However, even after being protected for nearly 50 years, there are still those out there who would rather see members of this species shot and killed rather than allowed to live in peace.

Tony Azzi, a multimillionaire car dealer, is currently being investigated for several wombat deaths which could see him landing in jail for six months or being fined at least $11,000. While this size fine might deter a lot of people, a multimillionaire like Tony Azzi will not blink an eye over it.. Hopefully, jail will deter where small fines won’t.

Azzi has admitted to Fairfax Media that he has “shot and killed wildlife on [his] country property” but “not before checking with local people and farmers for their advice.” Maybe he should be checking the laws first before asking around the neighborhood to see if he’s doing something illegal and check with his heart, if he is doing something cruel.

Smiling pictures of Azzi and his sales manager, Nick Karagiannis, kneeling over a dead wombat with rifles hanging over their shoulders have been found on social media, adding more proof to the allegations that Azzi gets joy out of killing harmless and protected animals.
