For many humans, fireworks are a beloved Independence Day tradition. But for other animals, including farmed animals, the loud explosions and bright flashes can be terrifying.

At In Defense of Animals' Freedom Farms sanctuary, our residents don't understand that fireworks are temporary. The booms can result in fight-or-flight responses: Cows can panic and stampede, horses can jump gates and run into roads, peacocks often seek shelter, and other rescued animals experience heightened stress and anxiety. The wild animals living around the sanctuary can abandon nests, flee familiar habitats, or become disoriented.

With that being said, our dedicated team prepares well in advance by ensuring new gates and fences are secure and that residents have the calmest environment possible. We work with local community leaders and neighbors to ensure celebrations are compliant with local laws, and we know peak times to provide extra safeguards. For our most sensitive animals, we provide shelter and background noise.

Fireworks don't just affect the animals at Freedom Farms. They impact countless animal companions, farmed animals, and wild animals across the country. Every year, shelters report increases in lost animal companions, wildlife rehabilitation centers receive injured animals, and sanctuaries take extra precautions to keep their residents safe.
