WATCH: Whispers of Hope: Stories of Rescue, Care, & Second Chances

Some lives turn on a single moment: someone notices, someone cares, someone refuses to give up.

In our new book, Whispers of Hope, Doll Stanley and Sharon Stone of Hope Animal Sanctuary and writer Meredith Wargo bring readers close to animals who faced fragile beginnings and found people ready to help.

Meet Pip Squeak, a tiny, desperately ill puppy who needed warmth and feedings around the clock; Carmella, a mother with a broken pelvis, and her newborn, Charley, who needed patient, round-the-clock care; and Pickle, the dog who finally got a plastic jug removed from her head after a determined rescue effort.

Whispers of Hope brings together stories of animals found frightened, sick, injured, or far too young to survive alone. Puppies and kittens, dogs, rabbits, pigs, and others face uncertain futures, then meet rescuers who refuse to turn away.

With urgent care, safety, and tenderness, these animals begin to heal and discover what a second chance can hold. Each story offers a glimpse of the fierce compassion behind rescue. These are only a few of the lives waiting to be discovered in this moving collection of courage, care, and hope.

Each journey is its own. Together, they reveal the power of compassion made real through warm hands, careful treatment, safe shelter, and people who show up when an animal needs them most.

Coming soon, Whispers of Hope celebrates the animals who held on, the people who stood beside them, and the second chances compassion makes possible.

About the Book:

In February 1993, beloved family dogs and cats were vanishing from porches and yards across rural Mississippi, only to end up as unwilling subjects of laboratory experiments. In Defense of Animals founder Dr. Elliot Katz sent Doll Stanley from the San Francisco Bay Area on a two-week undercover assignment to find out who was taking them. She never went home.

What began as an investigation eventually became Hope Animal Sanctuary in Carroll County, in the state with the nation's highest poverty rate. Over the years, chained dogs, starving horses, Hurricane Katrina survivors, and animals pulled from hoarding cases found safety there, whether temporarily until homes could be found, or as permanent residents.

In that time, Doll faced threats, took abusers to court, and spent years pressing Mississippi lawmakers for tougher cruelty laws. Then Sharon Stone, an AT&T area manager nearing retirement who was quietly feeding a pack of strays, stepped into Doll's world and became the Operating Manager of Hope Animal Sanctuary. With Doll free of the day-to-day chores of the sanctuary, she could focus on other things, including helping to pass groundbreaking animal legislation like Buddy's Law.

Told in two voices, Whispers of Hope is the true story of the women who refused to look away, and of the animals who proved that every life is a who, not a what.

Meredith Wargo is an award-winning writer and longtime animal advocate who loves sharing the stories of rescue groups and the animals whose lives they change. She co-authored DAWGS: A True Story of Lost Animals and the Kids Who Rescued Them. Her upcoming book, Whispers of Hope, brings readers more inspiring stories of rescue, compassion, and second chances.

UPDATE: The stories in Whispers of Hope come to life through the people who were there. This Monday, October 26, please join us for our monthly Fireside Chat, where we welcome author Meredith Wargo and Hope Animal Sanctuary’s Sharon Stone and Doll Stanley to share first-hand accounts of rescue, recovery, and the compassion that gives animals a second chance.
