WATCH: Caring Community Members Help Hundreds of Animals a Month in India
With hundreds of animals in its care everyday our partner IDA India’s Deonar Center in Mumbai is constantly bustling with activity, but the Outpatient Department is especially important.
With hundreds of animals being brought in every month by guardians and compassionate caretakers, the Outpatient Department really highlights how much the community cares for street animals.
Dogs and cats who are brought in get everything from vaccinations and surgeries to being spayed/neutered through our Animal Birth Control (ABC) program at a very low cost or free to ensure they don’t contribute to overpopulation.
The ABC program is vital as tensions remain high between those who want to see street dogs removed and those who care for them, resulting in the Supreme Court weighing in on this issue.
This month, in response to a suo motu petition (or one it filed itself), the Bombay high court asked the state government to “aggressively” implement ABC, essentially saying it’s the only way to solve the problem.
The petition was filed in response to a Supreme Court ruling in May that upheld its order to remove dogs from public spaces, including hospitals, schools and colleges.
We’ve seen how a lack of ABC programs causes serious issues that range from increased cruelty to physical and verbal assaults on community members.
