15,000 Dolphins Killed Annually For Shark Bait

15,000 Dolphins Killed Annually For Shark Bait

Peru is a country of extreme beauty and biodiversity and its coastline is no exception. Unfortunately, such an abundance of wild animal life tends to attract humans who want to make profits. This is precisely what is happening with the lucrative shark fishing industry, where it is common practice for fishermen to use dolphins as bait.

Killing dolphins to kill sharks is an atrocity that must be stopped. Stefan Austermühle, a German biologist, is trying to do just that. He went undercover on a shark fishing boat and filmed the tragedies that can be seen in a new video from OceanCare. Watch the video here.

The sharks are also victims of this slaughter, which is in fact illegal – yet the fishermen persist. OceanCare and other groups are calling on a permanent fishing ban and hoping that, with public support garnered by these haunting images, it will soon become a reality.
