Ban the International Dog & Cat Meat Trade

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

In Defense of Animals has led the fight to end the heinous torture and killing of dogs and cats for human consumption. We have been growing awareness, gaining staunch public support, and building political momentum to end this barbaric industry. U.S. Representative Alcee L. Hastings has introduced a resolution that could end dog and cat meat once and for all. We must take this opportunity to give the dogs and cats our support!

Representative Hastings introduced H Res 401 this year, "Urging China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, India, and all nations to outlaw the dog and cat meat trade and to enforce existing laws against the trade."

While not legally binding, H Res 401 does encourage United States executive branch officials to set up for discussion the dog and cat meat trade when creating agendas with officials of these countries.

It also directly implores these countries to ban the trade by making new laws or by enforcing existing laws, including making use of food safety laws. It also urges the governments of these countries to not allow "co-products" of the slaughter, such as cat and dog fur or leather, to be exported to international markets.

With 90 Democratic and Republican current co-sponsors, H Res 401 has bipartisan support from 27 states, but more are needed to ensure victory. Please take a moment to get involved and be a champion for dogs and cats!
