Stop Rep. Steve King: Animal Cruelty Incarnate!

Stop Rep. Steve King: Animal Cruelty Incarnate!

Rep. Steve King of Iowa is on a mission to destroy practically every piece of legislation that protects animals passed on the state level, but in one fell federal swoop. Hard-won legislation to protect animals suffering in puppy mills, on fur farms, in dog fighting rings, and on factory farms will be annihilated. Suffering animals will be hit hard and we must act now!

Since his time in office as Iowa state’s U.S. representative:

● King opposed a federal policy that came in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to help animals in disasters.
● King opposed federal measures to crack down on horse slaughter.
● King opposed federal measures against dog fighting.

He’s sick, and his abominable list of disgusting votes on federal legislation continues. However, the “holy grail” for Rep. King is a single piece of legislation he’s been trying to pass since 2013 called the Protect Interstate Commerce Act.

The Protect Interstate Commerce Act is a federal bill that, if passed, has the power obliterate all state animal welfare laws that impact trade between U.S. states.

Ideally, all U.S. laws that protect animals would be passed on the federal level, and thus apply across the entire United States, but often the only way to make any progress is by first introducing animal protection laws at the city or state level and growing them from there. Rep. King is well aware of this, and he’s absolutely furious because it’s working!

On April 18, 2018, not only was Rep. King’s Protect Interstate Commerce Act passed by the House Agriculture Committee, it was added as a provision to the 2018 Farm Bill. This is disastrous, especially for farmed animals, because this colossal 900+ page Farm Bill dictates the entire U.S. food system and is only revisited once every five years. King knows that it’s all too easy for dangerous amendments like his to get buried within its pages. We can’t let this depraved man undo decades of hard-fought progress for animal protection.

Very soon, the 2018 Farm Bill will be sent to the House floor for a vote. The animals need every single one of us to speak out about this amendment before it’s too late!
