Urgent: Don’t Give Animal Farms a Free Pass to Pollute!

There is something foul in the air, and we might be smelling more of it soon if the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has its way. The EPA has proposed an amendment to the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act which would grant animal agriculture a free pass from reporting its toxic air emissions. We can’t let these gross polluters get away with this!

The Agency’s administrator, Andrew Wheeler, along with other members of Congress and owners of intensive animal farms claim that reporting animal waste air emissions is “inconvenient.” Yet, rather than addressing the issue, their preferred solution it to allow the emissions to go unreported.

Animal manure “lagoons” emit dangerous amounts of methane and nitrous oxide, two of the major contributors to climate change, in addition to ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. Ongoing exposure to ammonia and hydrogen sulfide from animal waste can burn the lungs and reduce the motor functions of anyone unfortunate enough to live nearby or work at an intensive farm. In fact, these toxic gases have already caused the deaths of numerous farm workers.

Members of the government think these dangerous gases should go unreported. We say the industry must be held accountable for the environmental pollution and death it causes. Please join us in standing up to the EPA!
