Dog Thrown From Moving Car Has the Best New Life

In Defense of Animals’ work in the Deep South is the difference between suffering and life or death for the animals we rescue and aid fellow rescuers with. Sam Elliot is one of the hundreds of animals who have been pried from the jaws of death, and given the time needed for veterinary intervention and nurturing, not just for physical health, but also their emotional well-being.

Sam Elliot was a puppy rescued from the road after being callously thrown from a moving vehicle. His pads were bloody and torn. A call to SHARE-Grenada, a small local rescue our Justice for Animals campaign works with, accepted Sam Elliot and his uninjured brother, Lucky Chance. The pups were vetted, and SHARE-Grenada fostered Lucky Chance until he was placed with loving guardians.

Sam Elliot was kept at the clinic caring for him, and we’re grateful for the veterinarians who aid the many animals we help. Once they have played their role, healing wounds and illnesses, it’s our turn to foster the animals who have been emotionally wounded. Sadly, Sam Elliot did not want to be loved just yet.

Doll Stanley, our Justice for Animals Senior Campaigner, must limit the animals she can foster as the cases that take her into the field and need her presence in court are a priority, but she was able to take him in. Stanley made “Sam E.” a priority because he had to be kept on smooth floors until he fully healed. By then, he was growing “like a baby hippo” and adoptions had slowed.

Thanks to Charlie’s Crusaders, a group dedicated to screening adopters and transporting many of Justice for Animals and SHARE-Grenada’s rescues, Sam E. got his big break. Stanley was thrilled with the applicant, hoping to adopt into a new home this healed and now trusting adorable fellow. Sam E. made it into the arms of his new guardians, Yolanda and Leon Hampton, and we just have to share their experiences and updates with you.

“On September 24, 2022, our lives were changed drastically. We adopted the best puppy anyone could ever have! Say hello to our newest family member…Samuel Elliott Hampton!

Sam E. had a rough start to this world since his original humans threw him from a moving vehicle, and Sam E suffered injured paws. Sam E. was cared for and fostered by one of the most wonderful individuals I’ve ever known. Her name is Doll, and how fitting because she is a TRUE doll! Doll took Sam E. into her home to love and give him the best care ever. Doll treated and nurtured Sam E.’s paw back to good health and gave him the utmost love and support any dog could crave.

Sam E. traveled for 15 hours from Mississippi to Pennsylvania, where my husband and I anxiously awaited his arrival. When we met Sam E., he was scared and nervous, of course, but he warmed up quickly. Sam E. adapted very well to his new home and environment. His temperament was calm and mild. Sam E. is an affectionate puppy and loves to lay close to those that will give him the attention he deserves. Doll spoiled him, and now we have the honor of trying to fill her shoes by giving him just as much love, affection, and care as he needs. Sam E. had a few mishaps with the potty, but he quickly caught on, and we are past any mistakes at this point.

Sam E. was introduced to our 3 grandchildren, and he couldn’t get enough of playing, jumping, and running around the yard with the kids. Sam E. loves to be cuddled and have his neck and tummy rubbed. He’s very smart, and thanks to Doll, Sam E. knows many commands such as, “Let’s go, Sit, Stay, Lay down, Give me your paw, Leave it, and Give me a hug (I taught him the last one! LOL).

My family is so grateful, appreciative, and sincerely thankful to Doll, In Defense of Animals, SHARE-Grenada, and Charlie’s Crusaders for blessing us with such a wonderful puppy. Sam E. is well-loved and he has made our family very happy.”
