Minneapolis: Ban the Sale and Manufacture of Cruel Animal Fur!

Minneapolis: Ban the Sale and Manufacture of Cruel Animal Fur!

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

Fur is cruel, outdated, and dangerous. Cities, states, designers, and retailers are dropping fur, and we need you to take action to make Minneapolis, Minnesota the next city to go fur-free!

Fur farms are filthy facilities that deprive captive animals of space, socialization, and everything wild animals need to thrive. They are a breeding ground for disease and cause immense pain and terror. Please urge your city council member to ban the sale and manufacture of new animal fur products in Minneapolis!

To steal their fur, coyotes, chinchillas, foxes, mink, rabbits, and other fur-bearing animals are often anally or vaginally electrocuted on fur farms. They may also be bludgeoned to death, have their necks broken, gassed, or skinned alive. Furs from dogs, cats, raccoons, rodents, and other animals are often undisclosed or intentionally mislabeled by manufacturers.

Fur-bearing animals are also trapped in the wild and suffer agonizing wounds, broken limbs, starvation and dehydration, and attacks by predators. They die within a few agonizing days, or they are shot to death when the trappers return to collect their fur.

Fur manufacturing is not only cruel, it harms the environment and is hazardous to human health. Fur is often preserved with toxic chemicals, which ultimately end up polluting the soil and waterways of surrounding habitats. Mink fur farms around the world have experienced massive COVID-19 outbreaks since mink are highly susceptible to this highly contagious disease. The cycle of passing the virus from human fur farm workers to mink and back again has led to the development of mutated strains of the novel coronavirus.

Collective efforts have been made to put an end to the brutal fur trade. In October 2019, California passed the first-ever statewide fur ban, and other cities and states are working to introduce fur ban legislation. Oscar de la Renta, Saint Laurent, Versace, Prada, Gucci, and many more fashion houses have pledged to go fur-free. Giant retailers including Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's Inc., Bloomingdales, and TJ Maxx stores have also announced that animal fur will no longer be sold at their stores or online.
