Join the rally and “listening session” with the director of the National Park Service’s Midwest Region to save the wild horse herd at Theodore Roosevelt National Park on Wednesday and Thursday, July 12 and 13. The park has created a plan of proposed action to remove all the wild horses who live there. This two-day event will include multiple activities and a chance to have our voices heard to save these wild horses beloved by millions of park visitors.

Activities for the rally include:

Wednesday, July 12

A scenic tour carpooling/caravanning through Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) will be scheduled at two different times. Meeting times and places will be announced soon. Each car must have its own park pass to enter the park.

The new documentary film Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West will be shown at the Medora Community Center. This extraordinary film is by Ashley Avis, who also produced the recent Disney movie Black Beauty, a new take on the Anna Sewell novel of the same name. The film documents the plight of America's wild horses and burros and their unfair treatment at the hands of our government. The movie will be shown several times throughout the day. A virtual Q&A with some of the cast will follow! The exact movie and Q&A times will be announced soon.

Thursday, July 13

  • A lineup of expert speakers will provide information and insight into what is happening to America's wild horses, including those at TRNP. The talks will include information as to how to save them with advocacy.

  • National Park Service Regional Director Herbert Frost has committed to be present at a “Listening Session” for members of the public to respectfully share their thoughts and opinions about Theodore Roosevelt National Park's proposed action for the wild horses and longhorn cattle.

Updated information can be found at the Bully Pulpit Rally, where you can reserve tickets, and book hotel rooms at a discounted rate for this event; rooms in Medora, Belfield, and Dickinson have been reserved.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

For decades, two United States government agencies, the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service, have worked to destroy America’s wild horse and burro herds. Many of these horses and burros end up in horrifying situations, including the pipeline to slaughter. Now, the National Park Service has joined in that despicable activity to destroy our nation’s native equine herds. It has devised a plan to remove all the wild horses in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP).

The historic herd of wild horses in TRNP is under direct threat of complete removal. The park plans to eradicate this genetically unique herd of wild horses, beloved for years by park visitors and horse lovers.

The local advocacy group for the TRNP wild horses is called Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates, begun by Chris and Gary Kman. They have been working hard to raise awareness, and now wild horse and burro advocates from all over the United States and the world are joining the cause to save these special TRNP wild horses. The upcoming rally is the latest in their long list of accomplishments.
