WATCH: Sick & Tiny Puppy Goes from Barely Surviving to Thriving
This puppy was part of a litter we were asked to take when her mom and puppies were found alone with no one to care for them in Mississippi. The puppies were all healthy except for one who was only one-third the size of her siblings and barely hanging on to life.
Hope Animal Sanctuary animal caregiver, Jeannie Grammer, knew this puppy needed a lot of one-on-one care if she was to have any chance of survival. She was so thin and small that she was not able to regulate her body heat. Just a few minutes away from the heating pad would result in her body temperature plummeting. On that first day, Jeannie held her close so that the puppy could get warmth from her body heat. When the tiny dog was not being held, Jeannie made sure she had a heating pad.
Jeannie called her Pip Squeak and took her home with her at the end of her workday. There, she and her family cared for her, giving her the love and care she needed to survive. Even her young children helped by holding Pip Squeak so that she knew she was not alone. She returned to the sanctuary with Jeannie every day so she could be cared for during the workday.
She had to be syringe-fed every few hours because she was simply too weak to eat by herself. Day after day, Pip Squeak held on by a thread, but Jeannie did not give up, and amazingly neither did Pip Squeak.
Because of the constant special care given to Pip Squeak, she not only survived but thrived. Jeannie Grammer and her family decided to keep Pip Squeak, so her forever home will now be with the family that saved her life.
