9 Puppies Who Lost Their Mom Are Now Safe in India
Mumbai can be a dangerous place for street dogs, especially for moms who have to leave their babies to look for food. Sadly, that was the case with nine puppies we rescued with our partner IDA India, whose mom was hit and killed by a car.
Mother dogs who have pups are forced to take great risks just in order to eat and stay healthy enough to nurse. Tragically, accidents are common, but caring citizens often step up to help.
We were contacted by someone and rescued these little ones who were only about five weeks old at the time. Their mom had done a great job caring for them, and now we’re taking over for her and have them safely at our Deonar Center in Mumbai.
They would normally be in our special puppy ward, but it’s under renovation. In the meantime, they’re in a temporary ward getting the care they need.
Most of the puppies who come to us are patients, and many are taken back to the place they were found if they have caretakers who brought them in. If no one comes to pick them up, they stay with us, and we work to find foster homes and adopters.
Unfortunately, many people are only interested in purebred dogs and not in Indie dogs, even though they’re wonderful dogs and just as deserving of forever homes – and we’ve had a few end up being adopted by our trustees.
We hope to prevent tragedies like this and the number of unwanted animals by continuing to raise awareness about the importance of our Animal Birth Control program and encouraging more people to get involved in their communities.
