Lobsters are intelligent and fascinating animals, capable of living over 100 years in their natural habitats. As members of the crustacean family, which also includes shrimp, crabs, and krill, they exhibit unique behaviors and remarkable sensitivity.
Unfortunately, these sentient beings are frequently exploited in the seafood industry. Each year, over 300 million lobsters are taken from their ocean homes, subjected to suffering throughout their journey through the cruel seafood industry to people’s plates.
Lobster Facts:
- Crustaceans are sentient, meaning they have the ability to experience feelings and sensations.
- Lobsters grow by absorbing water and essentially bursting out of their exoskeleton. Theoretically, they could keep growing forever!
- Lobsters can live to be over 100 years old, but are eaten when they are around 7 years of age.
- Lobsters have elaborate courtship rituals and are gentle lovers!
- Lobsters can feel pain and react similarly to vertebrates by grooming and rubbing affected areas. They react to negative stimuli and retain memories of pain.
- When lobsters are boiled alive they feel everything – they cannot go into shock.
- The lobster fishing industry is a major contributor to the decline of the Northern Atlantic right whale population. There are fewer than 350 individuals left.
Lobsters endure extreme stress from the moment they are captured. The exposure to light, air, and fluctuating temperatures, along with rough handling and confinement, causes immense distress. Many lobsters are displayed in tanks for months, often unfed, with their claws banded, which leads to muscle atrophy.
It’s been scientifically proven that lobsters feel pain and fear, yet they continue to be killed in homes and restaurants without consideration for their suffering.
Unlike other animals, lobsters are not protected by animal cruelty laws in the United States. There are no regulations regarding their slaughter, and many are boiled alive without any oversight.
The lack of legal protections and inhumane treatment they endure highlights the urgent need for change.
In Defense of Animals advocates for lobster protection through outreach at lobster boil fundraisiers, and by reclaiming National Lobster Day as a celebration of genuine love for lobsters. As the world starts leaving animals off their plates, lobsters can be fully recognized for the sentient animals they are and enjoy protection from human cruelty.
