Resident Cats Get a Special Room of Their Own in India

Our partner IDA India provides care for hundreds of animals every day, but our center in Mumbai is home to more than 40 resident cats who will soon have a very special room of their own to enjoy.

Resident cats have always been a part of our Deonar Center in Mumbai. Some arrive in such a sad state they can’t be released, so there have always been blind and handicapped cats. Sadly, others are abandoned by people who bring them in for treatment at our outpatient department, and many who are admitted and aren’t picked up also can’t be released.

During the pandemic, the Municipal Corporation also made us collect cats from all the hospitals run by them for Animal Birth Control and didn’t take them back, while some cats, largely Persian cats who are popular, are abandoned all over as they are difficult and expensive to maintain.

When kittens come to us, we do our best to find them foster homes and adopters, but unfortunately, there isn’t much demand for older cats.

Our resident population has grown to more than 40 cats. Since we had to start using their previous room to accommodate an overflow of clinical cats, we thought it would be best to find them a new space and they picked this one themselves.

The room is bare now and it doesn’t look like much just yet, but it’s a favorite spot for the resident cats already, so we thought we would get it ready and furnish it for them.

We started with a gate that will allow them to come and go as they please, and soon the walls will be decorated with cheerful graphics, and there will be two cat trees, three cat hammocks, and three small sofas for them to lounge on.

We’re really excited to be giving them this special space where they can rest and relax, and receive the care they need for the rest of their lives, similar to the area we have for blind and handicapped dogs
