WATCH: 3 Little Black Dogs Were Dumped, But Got Lucky!
One recent afternoon, our Hope Animal Sanctuary Operations Manager was tagged in a social media post stating that three little black puppies had been dumped to fend for themselves in Mississippi. The post gave the location.
That same afternoon, Sharon Stone was scanning social media and saw that she had been tagged in the post. She realized the location was just across the highway from her house. She immediately went across the road and called for the pups but didn’t see them anywhere.
After searching for a little while, she went back home. Within a few minutes, a friend called and told her the puppies were running around Sharon’s mailbox. Sharon rushed back outside to investigate, but again, there were no pups! It was incredibly frustrating, as you can imagine. She called and called but no puppies appeared.
Sharon then ran into a neighbor whose dog was with her and trained to track, so when the dog put his nose to the ground, Sharon watched closely. He went toward a fenced-in area and out popped one of the pups. Sharon then made her way around to the drive leading to the fenced area. The tracking dog was leading the little pup when he suddenly got sidetracked and started leading the puppy straight into the woods. Sharon called him and luckily his ears won out over his nose and he came right back to her, the little pup running behind him and straight to Sharon.
When that pup was secure, she began calling and looking for the other two. It did not take long to find them inside of the fenced-area. They were so excited to see someone willing to help them, that they followed Sharon to the gate where there was a spot where they could get under the fence. They both came out and finally all three pups were in good hands!
These puppies were covered in fleas, and one had hair missing. Back at the sanctuary, they were treated and within a couple of weeks all the missing hair had returned.
Dumping of animals has reached epidemic levels across the country. Shelters, sanctuaries, and rescue groups are overwhelmed with homeless and unwanted animals. This is just one of the many reasons that our three-county spay and neuter program is so vital. We stand firm in our belief that sterilizing animals to prevent births is the only way to reduce the overwhelming numbers of unwanted animals.
These three puppies are a few of the lucky ones. They left this week heading to new homes in the Northeast where they will never be dumped again!
