WATCH: Another Year of Groundbreaking Animal Victories in 2024!

As 2024 comes to a close, let’s reflect on an incredible year where your compassion turned hope into reality for animals worldwide. Together, we’ve achieved truly groundbreaking victories from South Korea’s historic dog meat ban to freeing the Tule elk, to the release of three elephants from zoos to sanctuaries, and Mongolia’s first-ever animal protection law being passed. Every achievement was made possible by your unwavering support and belief in our mission to defend animals, their guardians, and the environment.

Elephants

Celebrating 20 Years of Advocacy with Transformative Milestones

2024 marked the 20th anniversary of our annual 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants in North America list. With the endorsement of actor and musician Harley Quinn Smith, we exposed the tragic life of bulls behind bars. This year, we reached unprecedented milestones for these majestic beings. Three more zoos — Oakland Zoo in California, Zoo Knoxville in Tennessee, and Point Defiance Zoo in Washington — closed or pledged to close their elephant exhibits, bringing the total to 41 zoos that have ended this cruel practice!

At the Los Angeles Zoo, we rallied to free Billy and Tina from our number one worst zoo, generating widespread media coverage and public support. Globally, we expanded our partnerships in Asia and Africa, promoted ethical sanctuaries, inspired a new generation of elephant advocates, and showcased animal-free circuses that provide compassionate entertainment.

Looking Ahead for Elephants in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Pressure the worst zoos to release more elephants like Billy (Los Angeles Zoo), Lucy (Edmonton Valley Zoo), and Chendra (Oregon Zoo).

Estimated Cost: $2,830 for specialized research, photography, video, and educational materials, rally in LA
  • Mid-term goal: Protect elephants and other wild animals from trophy hunting and the zoo industry. Build global alliances to support true conservation efforts.

Estimated Cost: $1,200 for conferences, speaker sponsorships, and outreach materials.

  • Long-term goal: Pass federal legislation to ban elephant breeding and importation by zoos.

Estimated Cost: $7,000 for lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C., attorney fees to draft legislation, and impactful materials like advertisements, fliers, and billboards to gain support.

Farmed Animals

Transforming Lives Through Advocacy

Your dedication has brought hope to billions of farmed animals in 2024. Together this year, we stopped plans for a new slaughterhouse in Jacksonville, Florida, sparked by a call to our Animal Activist Support Line

Our in-person protests at pivotal summits at the Animal AgTech Summit Conference in San Francisco, the AgriPulse West Summit, and California Farm Bureau amplified our urgent message that animals deserve our respect and protection. We also addressed the bird flu crisis in an online webinar

We celebrated World Vegan Month by partnering with Dr. Faraz Harsini and Allied Scholars for Animal Protection to give an online expert program urging 17 major universities to go 100% plant-based. On Respect for Fish Day we collaborated with marine animal advocates like Captain Paul Watson who shared their Fish Tales, and hosted an in-person outreach in San Francisco.

Looking Ahead for Farmed Animals in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Launch the Humane Myth Campaign to expose the “humane meat” and “humane slaughter” fallacies, expand vegan activism, and challenge speciesism through outreach, demonstrations, protests, and educational materials.

Estimated Cost: $3,000 for signage, video production, and photo documentation.

  • Mid-term goal: Strengthen In Defense of Animals’ leadership in farmed animal advocacy by emphasizing the urgency of veganism in all campaigns, and join efforts to ban farmed animal exploitation and slaughter.

Estimated Cost: $3,000-$5,000 for conference participation, speeches, and in-person outreach events, speakouts, and protests.

  • Long-term goal: Drive change through billboard campaigns, TV/radio advertisements, art as activism installations and demonstrations, partnerships with bold vegan advocacy organizations, and signature collection drives and ballot initiatives to highlight how animals used for food are the most ignored, abused, and killed animals on the planet.

Estimated Cost: $3,000-$7,000 for promotional materials, outreach, and videography.

Animals in Entertainment

Striking Major Blows Against Exploitation

In 2024, we celebrated landmark victories in our fight to end the use of animals in entertainment. Through our collaboration with Panda Voices and SF Zoo Watch, we brought critical attention to longstanding welfare issues at the San Francisco Zoo and opposed destructive panda acquisition plans with the Animal Commission which released a searing animal welfare report. This resulted in the San Francisco City Council ordering that an audit be taken of the crumbling institution, possibly derailing the panda acquisition plans.

We launched a campaign against turtle racing at Brennan's Bar in Los Angeles and garnered strong media attention through protests and public outreach. Also in California, we protested animal expos like the Reptile Super Show to highlight the exploitation of reptiles and amphibians in the pet trade. In Florida, we celebrated the Miami Seaquarium’s eviction after nearly 70 years of animal abuse, marking a significant step toward justice for orcas like Tokitae (Lolita).

Looking Ahead for Animals in Entertainment in 2025

  • Short-term goal: End turtle races at Brennan’s in Los Angeles, ensure non-animal entertainment is selected for Griffith Park, and assist Chicago Alliance for Animals in banning wild animal sales at The Animal Store.

Estimated Cost: $3,500 for protests, outreach materials, and sanctuary evaluations.

  • Mid-term goal: Advocate to shut down reptile expos, roadside zoos, and exploitative animal-based attractions like SeaQuest, and ensure Memphis Zoo loses its accreditation to prevent future giant panda acquisitions.

Estimated Cost: $6,000 for investigative work, public outreach, and advocacy events.

  • Long-term goal: Pass federal legislation banning the use of megafauna like pandas, elephants, and big cats in zoos, and prohibiting the captivity of orcas and dolphins in marine parks.

Estimated Cost: $10,000 for lobbying efforts, legal support, and public awareness campaigns.

Wild Animals

A Landmark Year for Legal Wins & Conservation

This year brought extraordinary victories for wild animals and the habitats they call home. With your support, we secured critical legislative breakthroughs: New York banned cruel wildlife killing contests and Washington became the first state to prohibit octopus farming. California followed suit, also enacting the Poison-Free Wildlife Act, imposing the strongest restrictions on anticoagulant rodenticides, and saved its Habitat Conservation Fund, ensuring vital support for wild spaces through 2030. Corporations stepped up with Max Mara pledging to end fur sales, and North America’s largest convention center installed bird-safe window film to protect migratory birds from deadly collisions.

We also amplified outreach for underrepresented animals through engaging programs. We hosted children’s storytime and trivia to highlight amphibian conservation on World Frog Day, championed insects at the Animal Vegan Advocacy Summit, and offered a virtual cooking class featuring compassionate alternatives to eating lobsters on National Lobster Day.

Finally, in Vermont, your generosity raised $4,000 to save a beaver family. This will install a beaver deceiver — a humane device that prevents flooding while allowing the beavers to stay safely in their natural home.

Looking Ahead for Wild Animals in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Reduce fear-driven wildlife killings by fostering predator coexistence and respect for wild animals.

Estimated Cost: $2,000 to create and distribute predator coexistence materials.

  • Mid-term goal: End wildlife trapping nationwide.

Estimated Cost: $4,500 to produce compelling educational materials, run social media campaigns, and advocate for state and federal trapping bans.

  • Long-term goal: Expand advocacy for underrepresented and misunderstood wild animals, protect migratory species, and reduce roadkill.

Estimated Cost: $12,000 to support the installation of wildlife corridors, create national campaigns for fish and insect protection, and fund studies to improve road safety for wild animals.

Geese

A Breakthrough Year for Compassionate Advocacy & Victories

Thanks to your support, our National Goose Protection Coalition helped avert lethal roundups of geese in Peapack, New Jersey, and East Lyme, Connecticut. In New Jersey, activists held overnight vigils in Liberty Park to protest USDA Wildlife Services’ planned execution of a beloved flock of over 20 geese — who, fortunately, were not found by the killing squad, resulting in a significant victory! In Connecticut, we presented our Goose Mitigation Resources, enabling a local goose advocate to secure key meetings with decision-makers in the nick of time.

In 2025, we plan to take it further by attending homeowner association conferences to promote non-lethal goose coexistence measures before killing contracts are signed. With your help, we can secure exhibit booths and showcase compassionate alternatives.

Looking Ahead for Geese in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Display billboards at key goose-killing locations. Join homeowners associations to advocate for non-lethal goose mitigation methods.

Estimated Cost: $3,000 for billboards and membership dues.

  • Mid-term goal: Complete goose roundup research to expose the misuse of taxpayer funds. Exhibit at trade conferences and present on non-lethal goose mitigation resources.

Estimate Cost: $5,000 for industry event fees and printing our comprehensive goose guides.

  • Long-term goal: Educate homeowners associations on alternative methods. Advertise in homeowners association publications. Provide non-lethal resources to decision-makers before they contact the government for lethal solutions.

Estimated Cost: $7,000 for ad costs and educational materials.

Sustainable Activism

Empowering Animal Advocates & Defending Compassion

We’re beyond thrilled to celebrate a major victory for animal activists with charges dropped against a cow rescuer! Thanks to more than 10,000 In Defense of Animals supporters who signed our alert, this rescuer can continue saving animals like Ismael and Little Willow, who wandered onto her sanctuary.

This year, we stood by activists through our Animal Activist Support Line, providing emotional and spiritual resources during tough times. We also hosted special support programs during Activist Appreciation Month to recognize and uplift all activists needing support while engaging in courageous efforts to save animals.

Looking Ahead for Sustainable Activism in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Expand the Animal Activist Support Line to provide 24/7 emotional and practical support for activists.

Estimated Cost: $5,000 for staffing, training, and maintaining the hotline.

  • Mid-term goal: Create a legal resource toolkit for activists targeted by bogus charges.

Estimated Cost: $15,000 for legal consultations, document creation, and distribution.

  • Long-term goal: Establish a Sustainable Activism Fund to provide grants for activists needing emergency legal or emotional support.

Estimated Cost: $50,000 to seed and sustain the fund, ensuring activists have access to immediate help during crises.

Tule Elk

Winning the Fight for Freedom & Rewilding Point Reyes

Years of demonstrations and actions — with your support — paid off, by successfully pressuring the National Park Service to initiate the process to dismantle the 8-foot-tall fenced “Reserve” at Point Reyes National Seashore. Later in the year, the California Coastal Commission signed off on it!

Big changes like this — reversing a 46-year-old federal policy that killed Tule elk and favored exploitative cattle ranchers — doesn’t come easily or quickly. We’ve kept the activist and political pressure on all year to get that fence down and to get the Tule elk rightfully freed in early 2025.

Looking Ahead for Tule Elk in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Resist relentless beef and dairy rancher lobbying and legal actions to prevent backtracking. Ensure the Tule Elk Reserve fence is fully dismantled, to finally and premanently free the elk in 2025!

Estimated Cost: $5,000 for advocacy campaigns, strategic media outreach, and direct policymaker engagement to uphold the fence removal.

  • Mid-term goal: Lobby and take action to remove all beef and dairy ranches from Point Reyes National Seashore, which are the park unit’s largest polluters and an ongoing threat to the health of elk and other wildlife.

Estimated Cost: $15,000 for legal consultations, investigative research, and public education to expose how destructive “small organic family cattle farms” are, and to build a compelling case for removing them.

  • Long-term goal: Champion the rewilding of Point Reyes by eliminating destructive human “management” projects. Make Point Reyes wilder than ever so that wild animals flourish, and humans can respectfully visit and enjoy nature responsibly.

Estimated Cost: $25,000 for conservation advocacy, partnerships to develop rewilding strategies, and education initiatives to inspire public support.

Dog & Cat Meat

A Historic Ban & Lifesaving Rescues Across Asia

After 30 years of consistent advocacy on our part, public attitudes have finally shifted, and the unimaginable cruelty of farming dogs for meat has been outlawed in South Korea! This landmark victory ends the suffering of millions of dogs and sets a new standard for compassion. We are already making strides to repeat this victory across Asia through our Global Anti-Dog Meat Coalition, joining hands with activists in China, Vietnam, and the Philippines to inspire transformation.

Meanwhile, we’ve continued rescuing dogs from the meat trade, flying dozens more to safety and their forever homes. Among them are incredible long-term survivors like Red, who we rescued from a dog meat truck in 2019. While many brave dogs who have endured unimaginable challenges are now flourishing with loving families, others like Harry and the sweet moms from our dramatic rescues are still waiting patiently for their perfect match. Could that be you? Your adoption or year-end donation to support their care could be the life-changing gift they’ve been dreaming of.

Looking Ahead for Ending the Dog & Cat Meat Trade in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Expand rescue and advocacy operations in more countries with high dog and cat meat consumption.

Estimated Cost: $20,000 for rescue missions, medical care, food, and temporary shelter for rescued animals.

  • Mid-term goal: Advocate for the passage of a sister city resolution encouraging major Vietnamese cities to outlaw the dog and cat meat trade.

Estimated Cost: $40,000 for diplomatic outreach, coalition-building, and public awareness campaigns to support these resolutions.

  • Long-term goal: Achieve the next national ban on the dog and cat meat trade through international agreements and diplomatic initiatives.

Estimated Cost: $75,000 for lobbying, international advocacy, and large-scale public awareness campaigns.

Justice for Animals

Fighting Cruelty & Protecting the Vulnerable

This year, we secured severe sentences for animal abusers, including nearly six years for a woman who brutally attacked Maya the husky with a mallet and five years for a man who sexually assaulted his cat, Ellie. Thanks to your generosity, we continue our relentless pursuit of justice for Argon, the German shepherd found in Malibu Creek Canyon with his mouth zip-tied in scorching temperatures.

As winter sets in, we are providing lifesaving igloo dog houses for chained dogs in Mississippi — a vital project that ensures that animals in impoverished areas are protected from the cold and wet weather.

Looking Ahead: Justice for Animals in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Increase resources for reporting and prosecuting animal cruelty cases.

Estimated Cost: $10,000 for creating educational materials for law enforcement and the public, and investigations and legal consultations for urgent abuse cases.

  • Mid-term goal: Provide 50 insulated Igloo doghouses to unsheltered dogs in rural Mississippi, ensuring they have warmth and safety during the harsh winter months.

Estimated Cost: $15,000 to cover the cost of Igloos ($200 for each), transportation, installation, and outreach to educate guardians about proper care and accountability.

  • Long-term goal: Establish a national database and task force to track and prevent animal cruelty.

Estimated Cost: $150,000 for developing a centralized database, forming a specialized task force, and enabling nationwide adoption.

Hope Animal Sanctuary

Uplifting Lives Through Rescue & Care

This year, Hope Animal Sanctuary has remained a beacon of hope for animals in Mississippi, rescuing and rehoming 377 animals, and providing 135 no- or low-cost sterilization surgeries. Our new Spay/Neuter Assistance Program in Mississippi has been such a resounding success that we have expanded into more communities, offering vital support to guardians who need it most. Each surgery prevents untold suffering by reducing unwanted animal births and empowers guardians to responsibly care for their animals, even in economically challenging circumstances.

From saving family after family of abandoned kittens and motherless puppies, to delivering lifesaving care animals like for Pickle, a dog we found with a jar stuck dangerously on her head, and an injured piglet, our sanctuary continues to transform lives daily.

Cetaceans

Fighting for Freedom & Protection in Every Ocean

We started the year with a major victory protecting highly endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Oregon unanimously voted to list them as endangered, ensuring critical protections for these iconic animals. In Florida, after nearly 70 years of cruelty, Miami Seaquarium was served an eviction notice following multiple citations for animal mistreatment, marking a historic shift for marine mammals who suffered and died in miserable conditions like orca Tokitae (Lolita). Having listed Miami Seaquarium on our 10 Worst Tanks list in 2016, we couldn’t be more pleased with this tide of change.

Meanwhile, we’ve taken action to stop threats to beluga whales in Alaska, urged Disney to retire its Epcot dolphins to a sanctuary, and campaigned globally to end the slaughter of whales in Iceland, Norway, and Japan. Together, we’re making waves to protect cetaceans everywhere.

Looking Ahead for Cetaceans in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Issue the next installment of our powerful 10 Worst Tanks for Marine Mammals list to expose the suffering of whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans in captivity, and pressure facilities to retire them to sanctuaries.

Estimated Cost: $15,000 for research, photography, video production, and outreach materials to raise public awareness and drive change.

  • Mid-term goal: Support the retirement of captive cetaceans, like Disney's Epcot dolphins, to reputable sanctuaries.

Estimated Cost: $50,000 for legal support, relocation logistics, and sanctuary preparation.

  • Long-term goal: Campaign for a national ban on whale and dolphin captivity through the passage of legislation like the SWIMS Act.

Estimated Cost: $100,000 for global coalition-building, advocacy campaigns, and lobbying efforts to influence policymakers.

Animal Companions

Victories at Home & Abroad for Animal Companions

Homeless animals face immense challenges. In some places, this includes being shot or poisoned for “population control.” In Mongolia, we helped pass the country’s first-ever animal protection law, which outlaws the slaughter of stray animals, saving an estimated 300,000 lives annually. In Türkiye, we led global protests to expose the mass killings of strays, while in Morocco, we demanded FIFA address brutal killings tied to the 2030 World Cup bid. Our advocacy even reached the UK Houses of Parliament where we shared our strategies for stopping the cycle of animal abuse and human violence.

In the U.S., we ended Petco’s exploitative rabbit sales just one month into its pilot program, marking a significant nationwide victory. In California, we supported community cat sterilization with donated drop traps, and funded vital spay/neuter surgeries for rescued rats. We also partnered with the Tarzana Neighborhood Council to provide the West Valley Animal Shelter $2,000 in essential supplies. Globally, we partnered to expand spay and neuter programs in Indonesia to combat the dog meat trade and save lives. Together, we’re creating a kinder world for animal companions everywhere.

Looking Ahead for Animal Companions in 2025

  • Short-term goal: Establish a spay/neuter program in Mongolia to address the overpopulation of stray animals and prevent inhumane practices like stray shootings by supporting the training of provincial veterinarians, funding sterilization procedures, and raising awareness about humane guardianship in regions lacking a cultural framework for sterilization.

Estimated Cost: $13,150 for initial community engagement, sterilization campaigns, and training for local veterinarians.

  • Mid-term goal: Expand advocacy efforts to promote humane stray animal management laws and practices globally, focusing on countries like Türkiye and Morocco where stray animal killings remain prevalent.

Estimated Cost: $50,000 for public awareness campaigns, lobbying efforts, and collaborations with local organizations to push for legislative reforms.

  • Long-term goal: Advocate globally for the adoption of humane stray management laws and practices, focusing on legislative reforms in countries with high rates of stray killings. This funding will drive global policy change and create sustainable frameworks to protect companion animals worldwide.

Estimated Cost: $100,000 for international advocacy campaigns, legal consultations, and develop collaborative programs with local organizations to push for and support humane policies.
